Description

New York-based filmmaker Sofian Khan’s documentary "BROTHER ROB" follows a recent event organized by Florida-based pastor Terry Jones whose campaign to burn the Koran in September 2010 drew worldwide media attention. The documentary gives voice to the contrasting perspective of a Southern white truck driver, Robert Stackhouse— a 20-year convert to Islam— who struggles to understand why his faith has come under fire.

Featuring exclusive footage of the ‘trial,' the piece gives an often absurd picture of a kangaroo court’s persecution of an inanimate object— the Muslim holy book, the Koran. Interestingly the arguments are conducted almost predominantly in Arabic by the Syrian Christian ‘prosecuting attorneys’ and Sudanese ‘defense attorney.' Inexplicably, 10 of the 12 ‘jurors’ are members of Jones’ flock, addressed in English by a translator who it turns out is also a member of the prosecution.

Absurdities aside, "BROTHER ROB" is a serious document of the growing Islamaphobia in today’s post-9/11 world. The filmmakers are currently raising money to expand the piece into a comprehensive feature-length film about Islamaphobia across the US and Europe. (20 minutes, 2011)

I saw the film on the channel last year.  I only caught the last ten minutes or so and wanted to see the rest.  So I purchased the DVD.  And I'm glad I did.  It's a very well done little piece, contrasting two very different characters.  Highly recommended.

a short but powerful piece November 23, 2011

I caught this film at the Woodstock Film Festival in October and was pleasantly surprised by the way it dealt with the subject matter.  For those familiar with Jones and his shenanigans, it's a great insight into his psychology-- as well as an unexpected twist with the other character, Rob.  I thought the latter could have been somewhat more developed, considering the film is named for him, but I still left feeling satisfied.
