This DVD contains three episodes all of which involve dogs using their extraordinary hearing, smelling, and sight to help guide and provide companionship to people who are deaf or blind. Dogs are also able to use their superior sense of smell to sniff out illegal substances and to find and rescue people.
Episode 1: Crucial Hearing
A Jack Russell Terrier barks to alert a young boy's parents if he stop breathing; Amos, a service dog, is trained to assist his deaf owner; and we learn how Canine Companions for Independence trains their hearing dogs.
Episode 2: The Uncommon Nose
Dogs are trained to detect illegal DVDs in Malaysia; a Springer Spaniel in England helps in fire investigations; and, in Japan, search and rescue dogs are trained to respond to disaster around the world.
Episode 3: Critical Sight
Axis guides his blind owner through her every day activities, including training for a marathon; border collies in South Africa are used to chase birds off runways at Johannesburg International Airport; and we visit a guide dog training center in Japan. (60 minutes, 2011)
